Down in the Underworld

Chapter 29 - A kick ass plan

Tentatively, Phoenix got to her feet and leaning on a control panel for support made her way quietly around the interior. It was an old Class C3-42 recovery vessel, but so highly modified that very few people would know it. Every movement was greeted by a silent screech of pain, but she had little time to think about that now. Phoenix knew that she could drive this thing given half a chance, but a way out wasn’t all she was looking for. She knew these types of subs had a hidden tracker. It was a long shot, but she had to hope Spectra hadn’t removed it and that Fury or Lady might stumble on to the signal if she could set it off. The gamble was huge, and the price of getting caught just as high. Running her hand along the underside of one of the control panels, Phoenix found what she was looking for. The small switch was still intact. With an intake of breath, she flicked it on. Now she could only hope it was working, she had no way of knowing if it had sent out any kind of signal at all.

‘Ok, so not a kick ass plan, but it’s a start,’ she muttered under her breath before lowering herself back down to the floor and slinking back to where she’d been sitting.

Now what about that piece of machinery. She was dying to get a look at what was causing all this mess and was hoping Spectra might give her an understanding of what it was for.

‘If she even knew herself,’ Phoenix mumbled under her breath.

Looking to her right she could see the bag on the floor, but not knowing how much time she had before Spectra came storming back made her cautious. She wouldn’t survive a further beating if Spectra really lost her temper, and she was in no state to defend herself. Her best option right now was to talk, and keep talking, and see what she could find out. She just had to wait for Spectra to cool down first.

‘If only I could drug her with something then I could sail right along outta here,’ sighed Phoenix, looking down the short corridor to see if she could spot Spectra, but she was nowhere in sight.
